Case Study #4:  STRATEGIC PLANNING
QLT Inc.

Challenge:

To identify, scope and quantify significant revenue and earning opportunities for QLT after the approval of its blockbuster drug, Visudyne ® and identify scenarios for future corporate development.

Action:

As a member of QLT’s 1998 Strategic Planning Committee, Mintz worked closely with the four other committee members at the Vice President and Director level to develop a revised 10-year plan. Mintz lead assessments and evaluated options related to: new market opportunities and revenue streams, their implications on corporate financials, downsizing, in-licensing technologies for new product development, internal development initiatives, and transitions in company leadership from scientific to commercial focus.

Results:

Mintz and the Committee recommended that QLT aggressively initiate in-licensing activities and that a core product, Photofrin ®, be reviewed for possible divestiture (which was immediately done by Senior Management).
